What should i do about a distracting head-up display while driving?

I just got a new car with a fancy head-up display, but I find the constant stream of information on the windshield really distracting. It projects my speed, navigation arrows, and even incoming call alerts right in my line of sight. I’m starting to wonder if having all this data projected in front of me is actually making driving less safe for someone like me who gets overwhelmed easily.

Yeah, I just got a new car with a HUD and it really feels like a constant stream. Speed, nav arrows, incoming calls all lighting up in my line of sight, and it’s overwhelming on busy roads. I started dialing it back—lower brightness, hiding nonessential widgets, switching to a minimal view—and it helped a bit, but I still catch my eyes wandering there sometimes.

I keep thinking maybe the issue isn’t the screen itself but my own habit loop. Our brains crave feedback, so I found myself scanning the HUD more than the road. A few weeks in I realized I wasn’t processing real road cues as well, and I felt more tired after short trips. It’s not a crash, just a slow fatigue.

Do you think the real issue is the HUD itself or your threshold for distraction, and have you tried turning off nonessential alerts?

One time I started obsessing over the color scheme and font size while I was driving, and I almost missed a turn. It felt silly later, but it stuck with me that attention is the real deal, not the gadgets.
