What should i do about a fence over my property line?
#1
My neighbor's new fence is about six inches over the property line according to my survey. I brought it up politely, but he's refusing to move it, saying it's been that way for years. I'm not sure what my next step should be, or if this is something I need to involve a lawyer in over a boundary dispute.

Had a similar thing last year. I paid for a new survey and found the fence sits six inches over my side. I asked my neighbor to adjust, but he said it’s been that way for years and refused. We talked about sharing the cost to move it, but nothing happened. I’m still deciding whether to push harder or escalate.

The practical thing I did was pull the deed and the plat and get a fresh survey. Concrete numbers beat vibes. I asked again and suggested splitting the cost or aligning to the line, but no luck. I haven’t hired a lawyer yet, maybe mediation could help.

Maybe the problem isn’t the fence at all. Boundaries can get murky with older plats. What if the survey is wrong or the line shifted since the original fence went up? Sometimes it feels like we’re fighting over a sliver of dirt while bigger issues sit in the background.

I tried marking a temporary line with spray chalk and left a note for my neighbor asking to talk. It led nowhere, but at least I had something concrete to show if someone else asks later. Not sure if that was smart or a detour.
