What should i do if my password was exposed in a data breach?

I just got a notification that my password was in a data breach from some old forum I don't even remember joining. I’m trying to figure out if I should just change that one password, or if I need to go through and update every account where I might have reused it, which honestly feels like it could be dozens.

I’d start by changing that one password right away. Then use a password manager to see where else you used it and swap those accounts if they’re important. It’s annoying, but it lowers risk.

I did something similar. changed it, then realized a couple of other sites shared the same one. It felt neverending, so I prioritized my email and bank stuff first and then slowed down.

I keep asking myself if the alert was real or just someone selling attention, so I don’t let it drive me crazy.

A few months later I found a bunch more accounts that were using unique passwords, and I kept a list in a note—ended up being less painful than I feared.
