What should I do with sentimental clothes that no longer fit my wardrobe?

I’ve been trying to reduce my wardrobe to just the essentials, but I keep holding onto a few sentimental items that don’t really fit or suit my current style. How do you decide what to do with clothes that feel tied to your past?

That sentimental tote from college haunted me for years. I took a photo, wrote a quick note about why I kept it, and then donated the rest. The memory stayed in the photo and the closet breathed again.

I try a simple test: will I reach for this in the next 30 days? If not, it goes into a donate box or a memory box. If I want it back after a week, I reevaluate.

Maybe the problem isn't the items but the story you tell about yourself when you wear them. If your style now is different, the old stuff might be a reminder you aren't who you were.

One morning I started the purge and got sidetracked sorting mugs and old notebooks. By noon I came back to the clothes, and a gray tee stood out as something usable without drama. It reminded me that not every memory needs a box, some just sit in the drawer.
