What should I expect from pulmonary rehabilitation with mild COPD?
#1
I’ve been diagnosed with mild COPD, and my new pulmonologist is strongly recommending I start pulmonary rehabilitation. Honestly, I’m a bit hesitant because I’m not sure what to expect from the sessions day-to-day, and I’m worried it might be too strenuous for me right now. Has anyone else felt uncertain before starting?

I felt the same at first. My first week was more about getting used to the routine than smashing workouts. They started with a gentle breathing warm up, then a short walk on a treadmill at a comfortable pace and a few low resistance cycle intervals. I left feeling shaky but encouraged that it was doable.

One session was tougher than I expected—my heart rate shot up and I got short of breath quickly. We paused, adjusted the pace, and the trainer gave me a small, achievable goal. By week three I could go longer with less panic.

Do these programs tailor to people who worry about being pushed too hard, or is it more one size fits all?

I kept a simple log: when I felt fine after sessions and when I felt wiped out. Hydration and a light snack beforehand helped a bit with endurance on some days.

I still have days I doubt it helps, but the small wins add up slowly. It’s not dramatic, but I notice I’m less winded doing chores and stairs after a few weeks.

The group vibe surprised me—people cheering during a tough interval, then trading quiet tips afterward. That sense of camaraderie mattered more than the brochure promised.

I’m not sure if the issue is the program or my own fear of failing, but I’m dragging myself to one more session to see what sticks.
