What should I expect from the AWS SAA exam as a sysadmin?

I’m trying to decide if getting the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate is the right next step for me after working in general sysadmin roles for a few years. I’ve built some basic cloud infrastructure at my job, but I’m not sure if the depth of knowledge tested is something I can realistically achieve while working full-time.

I tried it while working full time. I started with the basics then did hands on labs on weekends. It took around six months and a few good practice exams to feel ready.

Maybe the real limit is not the depth but how your current work uses AWS. If you only need basic ops the associate level might be more than you actually need and a hands on project could be enough.

I had a plan once and then life got busy. I did a few chapters and then paused for months. When I came back I liked the pace better but I still worried I forgot too much.

I kept a weekly hours target of about five just for study and I logged it in a calendar. Some weeks I hit the target and felt steady, other weeks I fell behind and had to adjust.

I found that my team already uses a mix of services and I could see direct value from learning enough to design and review solutions. If your role is mostly admin you may still gain helpful context though it may not be worth a full on cert path right away.

Do you think trying a smaller scope cert or a concrete cloud project first would tell you if the path is right without committing to the full syllabus?
