What should i expect if my scan shows a complex meniscus tear?
#1
I’ve been dealing with persistent pain in my right knee for about six months now, and my doctor mentioned the possibility of a meniscus tear after an MRI. He said the scan showed a complex tear pattern, but he’s hesitant to recommend surgery right away. I’m just not sure what to expect from this kind of injury or how to think about the next steps.

I went through something similar last year. Months of knee ache, MRI suggested a complex meniscus tear and the surgeon talked about watching and waiting first. I tried to keep moving but not push it, wore a knee sleeve, and started physical therapy. The pain stuck around and every new activity felt like a risk. It was hard not knowing if I should push for surgery or wait and see.

Then I leaned into the basics and kept a slow routine: strengthening the quads and hips, low impact cardio, and careful loading of the leg. PT helped a little, but the pain still flared when I pushed runs or hills. I kept notes on what triggered it and used that to choose what to do or skip each week.

Have you noticed any catching or giving way?

Sometimes I wonder if the real issue isn’t the tear at all but wear and arthritis or something else that MRI can’t pin down. It makes me hesitant to jump to surgery, and a second opinion or another test sometimes feels worth it before deciding.
