I just got a PS5 and I’m trying to decide which version of a game to buy when there’s a free PS4 to PS5 upgrade. Is the upgrade path always the same, or does it depend on the publisher? I bought a “cross-gen” bundle once and still had to jump through hoops to claim the next-gen version.

I bought a game that said cross gen and I thought it would be simple but I ended up chasing codes in emails and store receipts to unlock the PS5 version. It really depended on the publisher some let you upgrade at checkout others hid it behind in game prompts.

I tried the upgrade path once and it was a mess I could not find the offer in the storefront and when I finally did it wanted a new price I walked away.

Maybe the real issue is how the store shows the upgrade and the wording that triggers it I am not sure if the problem is the game or the shop UI and I am not confident about the cure It started as a simple choice and then I found myself thinking about digital versus disc.

Is there a standard for these upgrades or does it vary a lot by publisher?
