What should I know about the arbitration clause before signing a contract?

I’m finalizing a contract with a new client and they’ve included a clause about mandatory arbitration for any disputes. I’ve never had to think about this before and I’m not sure what I’m really agreeing to by signing it.

That arbitration clause means any disputes go to a neutral arbitrator instead of going to court. It usually ends up with faster resolution and less public scrutiny, but you give up the jury trial and the ability to appeal in the same way.

I signed a similar clause last year and felt blindsided because I didn’t realize it might cover small issues too. It seemed like a trap I couldn't back out of.

I tried to push back, asked for a carve-out for payment disputes or for specific issues, but the other side didn't budge.

Do you actually need this in your field, or could you push for mediation or a court option instead? The tiny print on fees got my attention and I still wasn’t sure who chooses the arbitrator.
