What should I listen for in modern jazz to feel it more?

I’ve been trying to get into more modern jazz, but I keep hitting a wall where everything just sounds like background music to me. I put on a highly recommended album from a contemporary artist, and while it’s technically impressive, it doesn’t grab me or make me feel anything. Maybe I’m missing the context or just listening wrong?

I get that wall. I used to chase the newest releases and felt only cleverness, not feeling. Then I started paying attention to the space between the notes and the breathing of the players. When I did that, a few tracks actually landed for me, even if most still felt distant.

I tried to love the flashy stuff, but it didn’t stick. One album finally clicked when I stopped waiting for a chorus and heard the conversation underneath the surface. It wasn’t a rescue moment, more like a dimmer switch turning a little.

I dragged myself to a tiny club and watched a solo improviser build a mood with tiny micro-phrases. It felt awkward at first—like watching someone talk in a language I hadn’t learned—but the mood lingered after.

Do you think you’re chasing a story or a hook and missing the texture?
