What should I look for in a ranked group that's not all about tryouts?

I’m trying to find a decent group for ranked play, but every time I join a clan’s discord it feels like I’m walking into a job interview. They want to see my stats, my main, my availability, and then they put me through these tryout matches where everyone is super tense. Is this just how it is now if you want to play seriously? I miss when it was more about just finding people to grind with who don’t take every loss personally.

I’ve walked into a few clans that felt like job interviews. They want every stat, every main, every time you’re available, and then the tryouts are tense as hell. I did find a couple groups that kept it casual—weekly sessions, no hard signups, just show up and grind—and those vibes were the closest to what you want: steady but not pressure-cooker serious.

I kept notes on what really mattered: responsiveness, how people talk after a loss, and whether we could laugh things off. Some clans looked chill until a streak ended and then everyone tightened up. A bunch of groups fizzled because drama outweighed the grind, which taught me to walk away sooner.

Maybe the real issue isn’t the group but how we frame serious play. I tried a handful of tryouts and left with the sense that people were guarding their rank more than guarding the team. I ended up playing with a couple of friends who aren’t in a clan at all, and it was enough to keep it fun, even if we didn’t climb. Is the real problem the vibe, or the system?

I wandered into a discord server that wasn’t about recruitment at all and it felt different. People talked maps and setups instead of resumes, and we slid into a tiny, loose squad that met when everyone had time. It wasn’t perfect for climbing, but it kept me sane enough to keep playing. Maybe there’s room for that kind of casual corner even in a ranked world, if you’re not chasing a formal squad.
