What should i look for to decide if a certified pre-owned suv is worth it?

I’ve been looking at used compact SUVs and keep seeing ads mentioning a "certified pre-owned" status, but the price difference from a regular used one is pretty significant. I’m trying to figure out if that extra cost is actually worth it for the supposed peace of mind, or if I’d just be paying for a fancy piece of paper.

I bought a compact SUV last year that turned out to be CPO. The price gap was real, a few thousand more, but the warranty helped when a starter issue popped up during a cold snap.

The glossy label is nice, but I found the inspection felt light compared to what I’d expect from a truly solid used car. The savings never lined up with the maintenance surprises.

We went with a non certified used and added a separate warranty; it wasn’t as painless as promised and some repairs still burned through the cash.

If you’re curious, ask what exactly the certification covered and who did the work. Otherwise you’re just paying for paperwork.

A friend swore by the peace of mind, then their tires and brakes wore out sooner than expected and the benefit faded.

Do you actually drive enough miles to justify the warranty cost and the higher resale drop if you ever sell it?
