What should i look for to determine a fair price for my first car?

I'm finally ready to buy my first car, but I'm completely stuck on how to figure out what a fair price actually is. Every listing seems to have a different number, and I don't know if I should be haggling from the MSRP, the dealer's asking price, or some other figure I haven't even considered.

First time buyer here too, and the numbers felt like a mystery. I looked at MSRP, dealer quotes, and what people actually paid after incentives and trade-ins, and I still saw wildly different figures. I started writing down every price line I could find and asked for an out-the-door quote to compare apples to apples.

I tried calling dealers with a list of questions and asked for the out-the-door price including tax, title, and fees. One place gave a lower sticker but slammed me with hidden fees, another gave a clean number. I tracked the difference and then realized the real gap was in financing terms more than the sticker price.

Maybe the problem isn't the car price at all. My budget was tight, but I kept hitting payment estimates and insurance gaps. I kept telling myself the monthly was the thing, not the sticker, and it still felt like I was chasing the wrong thing.

I did get a quote and it felt high, so I circled back and compared with a one-price dealer and a couple of nearby used options. In the end I left without buying because the numbers didn't line up with my comfort zone, even though the car was nice.
