What should I pack for a Japan trip with city walking and a day hike?

I’m planning a two-week trip to Japan and I’m completely stuck on how to pack. I want to be prepared for everything from city walking to maybe a day hike, but I also don’t want to be lugging a huge suitcase on trains. How do you decide what’s truly essential for a trip with such varied activities?

On my two week mix of city walking and one half day hike I built around a color capsule and quick dry fabrics. One heavy jacket that could double as rain layer, one lighter fleece, two pairs of pants that mix and match, and a single pair of sturdy walking shoes plus sandals. I packed in packing cubes and rolled everything to squeeze into a 40 liter carry on. A small umbrella, a compact daypack for trains, and I planned to do laundry mid trip so there’d be room for whatever I buy.

I learned the hard way that overpacking for a longer trip hurts. For Japan I aimed at carry on only and treated eight to nine days of outfits as my target. Three tops, two bottoms, a cardigan, a lightweight rain shell, one warm layer, underwear for seven days plus a few socks, and a compact towel. All of it fits in a 40 liter bag with a small toiletry kit. I tested this at home for a weekend, and though it felt tight, it left real breathing room on trains and in stations.

Maybe the real problem isn’t the bag. I kept thinking I needed hiking gear but in practice I wore sneakers and picked a easy forest path close to a station. I carried a small daypack with water, a light layer, and my camera. I didn’t bother with a second hiking kit and it saved weight. Do you really need hiking boots or could sneakers get you by?

Two phrases helped me: plan outfits and do laundry. I picked two good shirts that dry fast, swapped socks, and kept room for a souvenir or two. If you’re worried about trains, wear the heaviest item on travel days and stagger clean outfits later. It won’t be perfect, but it kept me moving rather than dragging a big suitcase.
