What should i pack for unpredictable weather in the scottish highlands?

I’m planning a trip to the Scottish Highlands and I’m trying to figure out how to pack for the famously unpredictable weather. I’ve heard the saying about experiencing all four seasons in one day, but I’m not sure what that actually means for what goes in my daypack.

I travel light and layer up instead of packing a full wardrobe. A wick base layer, a thin fleece, and a compressible shell that fits in a pocket. If the sun peeks out I shed the fleece, if the mist rolls in I pull the rain layer over my shoulders. It feels like carrying a tiny weather system instead of a full kit.

In the Scottish Highlands the wind bites, so I learned not to trust a single rain jacket. I overpacked rain gear once and still got soaked on a gusty pass. Maybe I should have kept the extra gloves and hat in the top pocket instead of a second drenched shell.

Is the real problem the wind exposure or the idea that you can stay dry all day?

I caught myself chasing the perfect waterproof shell once, then drifted into a coffee chat and remembered you really just need a light shell, a warm layer, and a spare pair of socks. A few small comfort items beat any fancy tech on a day that keeps shifting.
