What should I try first for a laptop fan grinding noise?
#1
My laptop’s fan has suddenly started making a loud grinding noise whenever I do anything more demanding than browsing. It’s a constant whirring sound that wasn’t there last week, and I’m worried it might be a sign of impending hardware failure. I’m not sure if this is something I can fix myself by cleaning it out or if I need to look into a professional repair.

That sounds like the fan is failing. I had a similar loud grinding last year and it kept whining even when I did simple tasks. It was a mix of bearing noise and a higher pitch that never went away.

I did a quick dust out with canned air and it cooled down for a bit, but the racket came back after a day or two. It felt like a temporary lull rather than a fix.

If it’s grinding, it might be a bearing or a loose mounting thing, and a repair shop suggested replacing the cooling assembly rather than fiddling with it myself. The price tag wasn’t tiny, so I hesitated and watched temps instead.

Maybe it isn’t the cooling at all but something else rattling around or a loose panel; I keep wondering if we’re chasing the wrong symptom. Do you hear it mostly under load or all the time?
