What should I try first for a laptop fan grinding noise?

My laptop’s fan has suddenly started making a loud grinding noise whenever I do anything more demanding than browsing. It’s a constant whirring sound that wasn’t there last week, and I’m worried it might be a sign of impending hardware failure.
