What should I tweak to fix the composition in this abstract painting?

I’ve been working on a series of abstract paintings, and I feel like the composition in my latest piece is just off. It’s supposed to have a sense of balanced tension, but instead it just feels static and awkward, like the elements are fighting each other without any visual rhythm. I’m struggling to figure out if I should rework the entire canvas or just adjust a few areas.

I know that feeling. In a recent piece I felt the tension collapse into something static. I tested one change by nudging a single large shape and watching how the gaps adjusted. After that small shift the rhythm started to breathe in a way that surprised me.

Sometimes I think the problem is not the whole setup but how the edges relate. I kept debating whether to repaint the edge or leave it, then I saved a version and kept working on another area. It felt endless and I never got a clean answer.

Have you tried masking a portion and painting a new passage to feel the rhythm again?

I was in the studio with a loud playlist and half the time I forgot what I came to fix. When I came back the canvas looked different and I noticed a new emphasis. Maybe stepping away helps you test whether the tension is really in the arrangement or in something you cannot name.
