What steps should i take when buying a used car from a private seller?

I’ve found a used car I really like, but the seller is a private party and not a dealer. I’m worried about getting stuck with a lemon if I don’t do this right. What specific steps should I take to protect myself before handing over any money?

I’d start by getting the title in hand before you pay anything. Ask the seller to meet at a public place and bring the title, the service history, and recent registration. Check the VIN on the car matches the VIN on the title and on the papers, and confirm there’s no lien. If something doesn’t line up, back away.

I hired a local shop for a pre purchase inspection when I did this. The mechanic checked brakes, tires, belts, and engine codes. They found a cooling system leak and some worn belts. We negotiated or not? We walked away from that car and kept looking. It felt like a lot to pay for something I hadn't vetted properly.

I once paid with a bank check and had the seller sign a bill of sale with the odometer reading, the VIN, and a note that the car is sold as is. It felt bureaucratic, but I slept a little better knowing there was a paper trail.

I thought about liens, recalls, and the risk of a lemon, but the biggest worry for me was a fake title or a car that belonged to someone else. I asked about payoff letters for any loan and tried to get a clean title in my name before any money moved.

Do you plan to check for any open recalls or electrical issues before you hand over money?

I brought a friend who knows a bit about cars and we did a short test drive, listening for odd noises and watching the idle. Afterward we walked around the block again and noted the steering response, but I still left thinking maybe I should have stuck closer to the inspected list and not trusted memory alone.
