What technique helps synth pads sit back in the mix without losing presence?

I’ve been trying to get my synth pads to sit further back in the mix without just turning them down. I’ll use a high-cut and some reverb, but they still feel like they’re sitting on top of everything instead of blending into the atmosphere. Is there something specific I should be looking at in the mid-range, or maybe a different approach to modulation?

Yeah I get that. When the pads shine they push forward instead of sinking in. I found the problem was mostly in the mids and the pad's chord tones clash with the bass around 400 Hz.

I tried dipping a little around 500 Hz and also nudging the high end down in a high shelf, and the pad sat back more.

I also boosted the reverb pre delay so the pad rides on a different timing relative to the beat, and that helped the sense of space.

Another thing I did was automate a touch of low mid cut only when the track opens, so during quiet parts the pad still breathes.

Do you think the real issue is the kick and bass eating the same space rather than the pads themselves?

I once gave up on thinking mid range and tried saturating the pad a bit to mask it, ended up making it blurrier rather than integrated.
