What techniques help convey a character's dread in a scene?

I’ve been trying to write a scene where my protagonist is genuinely terrified, but every draft just reads like a list of physical reactions—heart pounding, sweaty palms, the whole cliché checklist. I can’t seem to translate that raw, paralyzing fear onto the page in a way that feels visceral to the reader. How do you make someone feel the character’s dread instead of just being told about it?
