What top flatters wide-leg trousers for a balanced silhouette?

I just bought a pair of wide-leg trousers that I love, but I’m really struggling with what kind of top to wear with them. Everything I try either looks frumpy or throws my whole silhouette off balance. I’m wondering if there’s a specific fit or neckline that works best to keep the look intentional.

I found that tucking a slim top into wide leg trousers and adding a thin belt helps. A shallow v neck or scoop neck seems to play well with the waist and keeps the line clean.

I tried a cropped cardigan over a fitted shell with high rise pants and it read more balanced until it didn't depending on the fabric and lighting.

One afternoon I wore a boat neck tucked top and the silhouette felt heavy in the shoulders so I switched to a crew neck and kept the hemline neat. Maybe the problem isn't the top at all maybe the shoes or the way I stand adds bulk.

Not sure I have a slam dunk answer but I keep notes about what fabrics and lengths read as longer on me. A lighter fabric drapes nicer than stiff cotton.
