What top looks best with wide-leg pants without drowning in fabric?

I just bought a pair of wide-leg trousers that I love, but I can't figure out what kind of top to wear with them without looking like I'm drowning in fabric. Every time I try a fitted tee, it just feels off, and my usual blouses look too formal.

Try a cropped or tucked top to keep the waist visible. A slim knit, a satin tank, or a fitted polo with a half tuck can balance wide legs without making you feel swallowed by fabric.

I did the half tuck with a slim polo once and added a belt. It defined the waist and the pants didn’t overwhelm the look, even in loafers.

Could it be that the real issue isn’t the top but the length or the shoes? A little heel or a shorter hem can shift the proportions, and then the top choices feel easier to pair.

I wandered into trying a structured blazer over a fitted tee and hated it, then switched to a lightweight satin cami and suddenly things clicked. Maybe a top with a gentle drape or a defined shoulder would help, or maybe not.
