What top should I pair with wide-leg trousers to avoid looking frumpy?

I just bought a pair of wide-leg trousers that I love, but I can't figure out what kind of top to wear with them that doesn't make me look frumpy or like I'm drowning in fabric. Every time I try a fitted tee, it feels too casual, and my usual blouses just seem to disappear into the silhouette.

I had the same problem last season. Tucking a silky blouse into a high waist with a slim belt made the waist visible and the pants still feel roomy.

If you want to stay polished but not stuffy, try a structured top like a crisp button-down or a fitted blazer worn open over a cami. The clean lines balance wide legs without swallowing you.

Could it be the length or the shoes? If the hem hits the floor or puddles, nothing on top will fix the silhouette.

I also played with color—something darker on top to keep the eye up, then swapped the shoes for a heel or chunky sandal. It helped a bit, but I still end up testing different outfits in my living room.
