What top should I wear with wide-leg trousers for a balanced look?

I just bought a pair of wide-leg trousers that I love, but I’m really struggling to figure out what kind of top to wear with them without looking like I’m drowning in fabric. Everything I try seems to either clash with the silhouette or make my whole outfit feel unbalanced.

I found that a slim knit or a tucked in button-down really helped with wide-leg trousers. It keeps the top from swallowing you and a small belt at the waist anchors the silhouette.

I tried a cropped blazer over a simple tank and it balanced the proportions without that overwhelmed feeling. The trick for me was adding a bit of height with heels.

A flowy blouse swirled around the legs and looked off, so I stuck with fitted tees or satin camis to keep the line clean.

Would you consider whether the rise or the length of the pants is the real blocker, rather than the top?
