What top should I wear with wide-leg trousers for balance?
#1
I just bought a pair of wide-leg trousers that I love, but I’m really struggling to figure out what kind of top to wear with them. Every time I try a fitted shirt it feels too severe, but my usual loose blouses just make my whole silhouette look frumpy and shapeless. I’m wondering if there’s a specific top style or fabric that creates a better balance.

I found drapey fabrics like satin or lightweight viscose work with wide leg trousers. Tucking in at the front and letting the back float a bit creates a waist without feeling stiff.

A cropped or tucked in top with a belt helped me. The belt creates a vertical break and keeps the eye from wandering along the wide leg.

A top with a bit of shoulder structure or a soft puff sleeve can balance the volume of the trousers, especially with a high waist.

Layer a light blazer or cardigan that hits at the hip to carve out the waist without constraining the torso.

I had mine hemmed a touch so the line falls just at the shoe; the longer line feels more purposeful and less frumpy.

Sometimes I wonder if the issue is overall proportion more than the top and a wrong length or shoe can make the whole look off.

Do you usually wear heels or flats with them?
