What top should I wear with wide-leg trousers to avoid drowning in fabric?

I just bought a pair of wide-leg trousers that I love, but I can't figure out what kind of top to wear with them without looking like I'm drowning in fabric. Every time I try a fitted tee, it just feels off, and my usual blouses look too bulky tucked in.

I went through the same thing last season. I found that a cropped knit or a slim satin cami tucked in just at the front keeps the leg line clean and avoids that drowning look.

I tried a fitted tee and it did feel short and bulky at the waistband; then I swapped to a tucked in V neck blouse with a thin belt. It helped define the waist without adding bulk.

Do you think the real issue is the top, or is the cut of the trousers the real problem?

One time I wore them with a loose longline blazer over a slim top and the proportion felt off but not awful, maybe just a quick reminder to check footwear or hem length.
