What top should I wear with wide-leg trousers to avoid looking frumpy?

I just bought a pair of wide-leg trousers and I have no idea what kind of top to wear with them. Everything I try either looks frumpy or throws my whole silhouette off balance, and I’m worried a fitted shirt will just look too stiff.

I tried tucking in a fitted knit and adding a slim belt with a short jacket. It helped the top not disappear under the pants and made my legs look longer. I also wore pointed flats for balance.

A drapey blouse in a soft fabric can work if the top has movement but stays closer to your torso. I wore a silk top with high waist pants and that extra drape helped break up the volume.

Maybe the issue is not the top but the length of the pants or the shoes you pair with them. I found a heel or a chunky boot changed the proportions.

I am not sure this will fix it and I keep doubting if the problem is really the top. Do you want something casual or office ready?
