What top should i wear with wide-leg trousers to avoid looking frumpy?

I just bought a pair of wide-leg trousers that I love, but I'm struggling to figure out what kind of top to wear with them so I don't look frumpy. Everything I try either gets lost in the volume or makes my silhouette feel off.

I found that a fitted top tucked at the waist makes the line clearer. With wide-leg pants, I go for a slim knit or a crisp tee and a high waist, or I try a cropped cardigan that sits at the top of the hip. Looser blouses swallow the silhouette, so I avoid floatsy fabrics. A simple belt helps anchor the look and keep the eye from running up and down the pant leg.

Sometimes I reach for a structured blazer over a fitted top. A cropped or waist-length jacket keeps the top half in proportion and stops the bottom from taking over. Pair it with a low but solid heel to balance the length.

Do you usually tuck in, or go loose on top? I ask because that choice changes where the eye lands and can make a big difference.

I remember trying a satin blouse with the same pants and feeling overdressed for day, so I swapped to a tight mock neck and a belt and suddenly the outfit read more like me. Also, shoes mattered—the right boot or pump can ground the hem without fighting the volume in the pants.
