What true crime podcast digs into the investigative process rather than gore?

I’ve been trying to find a good true crime podcast that doesn’t just focus on the gore but really digs into the investigative process and the people involved. I listened to one recently that had a really compelling multi-part series on a cold case, but I’m worried I’ve already found the best one out there and everything else will feel shallow by comparison.

Yeah I went looking for that too and I kept landing on shows that talk to investigators and victims rather than just the crime itself. One standout is a long multi part on a cold case that actually follows the trail and the notes the doubts and the places the team argued. It felt grounded even when the pacing got slow.

I tried a few others and some just skim the surface. I paid attention to how many guests they bring in and whether they defend or question the evidence rather than present a neat verdict. I stopped listening to one after a couple of episodes because the pace and the voice felt too glossy and there was no real sense of process. I did keep a log of what felt like real investigative work and what felt like storytelling.

Could it be that the format is the problem and the real appeal is how people handle the messy parts of a case?

I'm trying a newer series that leans into interviews and documents and it feels half baked but promising. The episodes are messy and not tightly explained yet but you hear the twists and the hesitations in real time. If you want another option that feels grounded this season I would give it a listen.
