What true crime podcast handles victims with respect and solid journalism?
#1
I’m trying to find a good true crime podcast that doesn’t feel exploitative of the victims or families. I just listened to one where the hosts were making light of the situation, and it left a really bad taste in my mouth. Are there any that handle the subject with more respect and focus on the investigative journalism side?

In the Dark is the one I keep coming back to for the way it anchors the story in real records and court filings, not fakey drama. They pause when it counts and don’t turn victims into punchlines.

Someone Knows Something is slower and really leans into listening to families and local investigators. It can be heavy, but it never feels exploitative.

Criminal as a show feels careful about tone, more about the idea of a case than spectacle, which helps when I’m avoiding the sensational stuff.

I started a few others hoping for that balance and mostly dropped them because the tone grated or the family moments felt used.

Do you want something that stays close to the investigative process or something that also foregrounds victims and families?

If you want consistency, maybe try one season at a time and check for host commentary that pauses for context before leaping to conclusions.
