What true crime podcast has real investigative weight and solid hosts?

I’m trying to find a good true crime podcast that doesn’t just rehash the same famous cases everyone already knows, but I keep hitting dead ends. Even the ones that promise “deep dives into lesser-known mysteries” often end up feeling superficial or overly dramatic. I’m looking for something with real investigative weight, where the host’s dedication to the facts is obvious.

I chased a few that promised deep dives into lesser known cases and felt like surface skimming. So I started keeping a quick source log after each episode to see what was actually cited, and whether they chased real documents.

There was this one host who actually digs through court filings and FOIA docs; the pace is slower, but you can tell the weight is real. Still, not every episode lands.

Maybe the problem isn't the hosts but that many so called investigations run on drama, not evidence, and I bailed on a season halfway through. Do you think the real problem is the format, or that real investigative weight is hard to capture in audio?

If you want a practical bar for a true crime podcast, look for shows that publish source lists, transcripts, or at least a notes section about documents. I ignore anything that relies on mood over corroboration.
