What was the director's intention behind the final smile in the ending?

I just finished watching the movie and I’m still turning over that final shot in my head. What do you think the director was trying to say with the character’s faint smile as the screen cut to black? It felt ambiguous, like it could mean either acceptance or something more sinister.

That final smile stuck with me too. It felt like a door closing on a chapter the character won’t reopen, but not with certainty — more with a quiet, messy resolve.

I keep wondering if it's relief or resignation. The director might have planted little hints earlier, but the smile makes them feel unsteady, like the story wants you to fill in the rest.

Most of my take was just fatigue from watching a long arc, and the cut felt like a dare to project whatever you want onto that moment.

Is the real problem here that I’m reading a thrill into a simple close, and maybe the film just wanted us to linger on uncertainty?
