What went wrong with my three-way smart switch setup in the hallway?

I’ve just installed a bunch of smart switches, and I’m realizing I might have made my dumb lights too clever for their own good. The living room ones work perfectly, but the three-way circuit in the hallway is now a total headache—tapping the physical paddle sometimes turns it off at the switch instead of the bulb, leaving the whole system confused.

That hallway three way mess sounds exactly like what I ran into. When the smart master and the add on switch aren’t perfectly paired the system throws a bit of a temper tantrum. I noticed the paddle would flick and the bulbs would stay on or off inconsistently, and the app would report the state mismatched for a moment.

I tried a practical tweak: kept the master in control, removed the local auto toggle on the wall and watched how the state synced. After a couple days the mismatch dropped from every other press to once in a while, and the hallway lights finally behaved more like the living room. Still not perfect, but I’ll take it.

Could be the problem isn’t the switches at all but the bulbs or load. Maybe the dimmable bulbs aren’t fully compatible with the particular three way setup, or the wattage is flirting with the switch’s minimum. Hard to tell.

I’m starting to think maybe this isn’t the real problem at all. I keep second guessing whether the hallway should stay smart at this point. Might be better to revert one box to a conventional toggle and see if the wonkiness disappears.
