What would a seamless smart lock and video doorbell routine look like?
#1
I just installed a smart lock and a video doorbell, but I’m not sure if having them work together is actually useful or just a gimmick. My doorbell sees a delivery person walk away, but then the lock doesn’t automatically engage behind me when I grab the package. It feels like these two things should create a seamless routine, but right now they’re just separate gadgets on my phone.

I set them up and still mostly use them as two separate gadgets. The doorbell shows me deliveries, but the lock behind me never feels automatic enough to rely on.

I tried a rule: trigger the lock if the bell rings and nobody is at the door after 10 seconds. It happened once, then nothing consistent. Logs looked flaky.

Is the real problem that we’re optimizing for a feeling of seamlessness rather than actual security?

I drifted off topic for a bit, but then I came back to reality: when I stopped chasing perfect automation and just used the lock manually, the system felt calmer, like I wasn't chasing a gadget to do what my habit should.
