When do post-viral coughs usually last before you should see a doctor?

I’ve been dealing with a persistent, dry cough for about three weeks now, and my doctor mentioned it could be a post-viral issue. I’m just wondering how long something like this typically lasts before it’s considered abnormal and needs more investigation.

In my experience it varies a lot. A cough after a cold can last a few weeks to a couple of months and then gradually ease into just a dry tickle.

Three weeks in I was still coughing, and I started keeping notes on triggers and what helped. A lot of people say this kind of cough after a viral infection can linger longer for some folks. If it stays past six to eight weeks I would push for another check.

Do you notice it flares when you talk a lot or when you are in dusty rooms and do you have any pattern you could share?

Sometimes I worry the cough is masking something else like allergies or reflux and not the virus itself. It can feel slow and unsure and you end up chasing explanations that keep shifting.
