When do you think the ambiguous ending happened to the main character?

I just finished a novel with a famously ambiguous ending, and I can’t decide what I think actually happened to the main character. My book club is split right down the middle, and I keep going back to the final few pages looking for clues I might have missed.

Rereading the last chapter twice, I marked every shift in pronouns from we to I and every image that repeats like doors and windows. It still feels like an ambiguous ending was chosen on purpose, and I can’t tell if the character walks into light or vanishes into the crowd.

I tried to pin it on a single metaphor, but it kept slipping away. It reads like the narrator could be unreliable, which makes me doubt any literal outcome.

Do you think the real issue is how the club reads it, not what actually happened? I wonder if the tension comes from our own fears more than the text.

A week ago I had a solid theory, then someone pointed out a tiny line elsewhere that could fit either finale. Now I’m torn and not sure if chasing clarity is worth it, so I mostly sit with the space between possibilities.
