When is it worth moving from shared hosting to a cloud vps?

I’m trying to decide whether to move my main business site from a standard shared hosting plan to a cloud VPS, but I’m worried about handling the server management side. My current host has been fine, but traffic spikes are starting to cause noticeable slowdowns, and I’m not sure if I’m ready to take on patching and security myself.

I switched from shared hosting to a small cloud VPS last year when traffic spiked. I wanted more headroom and kept things simple by choosing a managed option for updates and a basic firewall and security. It still feels rough at times but the spikes mostly go through now.

I used a VPS for a short test and felt buried by updates and monitoring. I kept delaying the real shift because the maintenance bit felt bigger than the gains at first. In the end I stayed on the old plan for now and logged the update windows after a few alerts.

Sometimes I think the bottleneck is not the server but how the site handles data and images. I did a quick cache tweak and trimmed a few slow queries and the page felt snappier without changing hosts.

Could it be that the real issue is how the site loads under load not the hosting? If the answer is no I might still go cloud but I am not sure
