When should I focus on resource management to beat the mid-game grind?

I’ve been trying to get better at this game, but I keep hitting a wall around the same point every time. My friends say I need to improve my resource management, but I’m not even sure what I’m mismanaging. Has anyone else felt totally stuck in the mid-game grind?

Totally. I hit that mid game wall every time. It looks like I have enough to buy upgrades, but I can't connect the dots into real momentum. I started logging a tiny notebook: what resource came in, what I spent, and on what upgrade, every round. Seeing the pattern helped me realize I was spending too early on flashy upgrades instead of steady growth. It helped a bit, but I still feel stuck.

I tried narrowing down to one resource line for a stretch, but I burned out on micro decisions. I kept the other resources on autopilot and then hit a bottleneck where I had plenty of gold but no upgrade or unit that used it well. I even pulled back a couple of builds and cut a couple of upgrades to see if the flow would relax. It did not magically fix the mid grind, just shifted the bottleneck elsewhere.

I tried a tiny data approach: track cycle time to upgrade and the resource delta between turns. It showed I was keeping up on income but upgrades were late or too small to matter. The numbers felt obvious, but I still couldn't map it to a fix. Maybe the issue is pacing more than raw income.

Sometimes I catch myself tweaking base layouts and microing tiny defenses just to feel busy, and then I realize I was chasing the wrong feeling. Do you think the real bottleneck is timing or maybe you’re chasing the wrong metrics?
