When should I worry about buying a used car with no service records?

I’m looking at a used car that seems perfect, but the seller doesn’t have any service records at all. How much should that worry me? I know it’s had a couple owners, and without that paperwork, I’m just going on their word about the oil changes and basic maintenance.

Yeah, that worries me too. No maintenance proof means you’re buying the story of the car rather than the facts. I’d still drive it and get a pre purchase inspection; look for red flags like unusual oil on the dipstick, excessive exhaust smoke, mismatched tires, or a spotless engine bay that doesn’t match the age. The seller might be honest, but the missing paperwork makes it feel like you’re chasing shadows.

I bought one with patchy paperwork a couple of years ago. It ran okay for six months, then a bunch of small issues popped up. Each fix ate into the savings I hoped to keep.

Do you have a trusted mechanic you could bring along to take a quick look?

No records, no receipts, and you’re guessing about the basics. It’s not a dealbreaker, just a big source of uncertainty.

I spent a weekend chasing a tiny oil drip on another car and learned I should have just asked for receipts. With this one, the lack of papers makes me pause and drift a bit.

I asked the seller for receipts, and they produced a handful, mostly oil changes and a brake job. It was helpful, but it didn’t prove everything else was done.

It might be worth considering whether the real issue is whether the car has been in an accident or had parts swapped, since maintenance alone won’t tell you that.
