When should we see a doctor about persistent toddler ear infections?
#1
I’m trying to figure out if my toddler’s recurring ear infections are something we should just keep treating as they come, or if it’s time to ask our family doctor about a more permanent solution. The constant rounds of antibiotics worry me, and I’m not sure what the threshold is for considering tubes.

I remember the year my toddler kept getting infections every few weeks and the antibiotics started to feel endless. We did a few rounds and worried about the meds more than the symptoms. The doctor suggested a referral to a specialist after three episodes in six months. Tubes sounded scary at first but listening to the specialist helped me see the potential that some kids need less medicine.

We stalled and tried to ride it out for a while. We kept them home when they were sick and tried to keep the air clean and the bedtime routines steady. The doctor said tubes could reduce future infections and cut down antibiotic use, so we weighed the risks and did not jump in right away.

We had a hearing test done and it was normal, but there was still fluid behind the drum on visits. It was hard to tell if it affected how they heard because toddlers are busy. It felt reassuring to have data without a clear magic fix.

I sometimes wonder if the real problem is the environment like daycare and exposure rather than the infections themselves. We tried to limit exposure when possible and kept a cleaner routine but the infections came anyway. I also heard from other parents that some kids just carry bacteria differently.

Do you think a formal hearing test with an audiologist is worth it?

We ended up talking with a specialist and decided to delay tubes for now. It was a relief to have a plan even if the outcome was not clear. In our case infections persisted a bit after the consult but the family felt they were making progress.
