Where can i find a local walking group with a steady pace and chat?

I’ve been trying to find a good local walking group for ages, but every one I’ve joined either moves way too fast or just ends up as a coffee chat. I really just want a steady, social pace where you can actually talk while you walk. Has anyone else around here found a group that actually sticks to that?

That sounds familiar. I joined a 'social pace' group last spring. We agreed at the start to keep it conversation friendly, did a short warmup, and if someone fell behind we paused and looped back instead of leaving them. It felt doable for a few weeks, and the chat stayed lively most days. Route choices mattered though, and we sometimes had to switch to shorter loops to stay honest about the pace.

I ended up helping start a slower group once. The intro message stressed 'no one gets left behind' and we kept it to about 1.5 miles with a cafe stop around the 40 minute mark. It wasn't glamorous, but people kept showing up because you could actually talk while walking.

Sometimes I wonder if the problem is the time of day or the route, not the pace. I tried a weekend group that blew through a couple miles in no time and then everyone scattered for coffee; the talking part felt rushed and short.

I gave up on the big clubs and just walk with a couple neighbors now. We take a loose pace, no stopwatch, and we can chat without gasping. It isn't a formal group, but it's reliable.

One trick I tried was planning little bench breaks every half mile or so, giving people a moment to breathe and actually say something other than 'nice weather'.

Where are you based? I know a few slower, chat‑friendly walks around town that might fit, if you’re in the right area.
