Where can I find an honest local mechanic who won't overcharge?

I’m trying to find a good local mechanic who won’t overcharge for basic work on my older car, but I’m never sure who to trust. Has anyone had a really positive experience with an honest shop around here lately?

I had a really honest, straightforward experience at the little shop on Main Street. They showed me the old part, explained what needed fixing, and the bill came in about what they quoted. No pressure after the work, and they didn’t upsell anything.

I tried a shop that kept pushing extra tests and a big diagnostic fee. The bill jumped more than I expected, and I left with a stack of notes that didn’t match what I thought the car needed.

Maybe the problem isn’t trust at all, maybe the car is just old and every fix costs more than it’s worth. I asked for a written estimate and still felt blindsided by labor time.

If you’re narrowing it down, ask for a written estimate before any work and ask to see the worn parts after they’re replaced.
