I just moved to a new city and joined this forum hoping to meet people, but I'm honestly not sure how to start. Everyone seems to already have their own groups, and I feel a bit awkward just jumping into conversations. How did you all make your first connections here?

I moved here last year and was terrifically awkward about it. I dropped a quick hello in the newcomers thread, said I’d be up for coffee if anyone wanted to chat. A couple folks texted, we met at a cafe, and one of them pointed me to a weekly game night. Not genius, but it worked.

I just showed up early to a monthly meetup that was listed in the calendar. I stood by the snack table and asked the person next to me what they liked about living here. We swapped a few recs, and now I see them at events and in other threads.

Maybe the problem isn’t me, maybe it’s the vibe of the thread. I tried a couple of messages and felt like I was intruding. I’m not sure if I read people right.

I once wandered into a park event after reading about it, forgot my water bottle, stood there half listening to a conversation, and ended up chatting with a parent about the trail. Then we wandered to a nearby cafe and talked about local spots. It wasn’t a master plan, just showing up and trying to say something small.
