Where do we draw the line between harsh criticism and harassment in forums?

I’ve noticed a few regular posters in our community who consistently push right up against the rules without quite breaking them, often derailing threads with a tone that feels intentionally provocative. Where do you draw the line between harsh but acceptable criticism and behavior that actually harms the forum? It’s making moderation feel really subjective.

Yep I’ve watched it too. A few regulars push right up to the line with sharp digs and sly jabs, and you can feel the thread shift before anyone acts. It’s harsh without breaking rules, but it wears people down fast.

We tried a soft approach last month: a public note when a post crossed the line, then a private nudge if it happened again. It knocked the heat down for a week or so, then the same pattern came back and we backed off from making it a bigger thing.

Is the real problem the posts or the way we read them? Sometimes I worry we mistake tone for intent and end up policing what people mean to say instead of what they actually do.

I wandered off once to compare with another thread on a different site and the vibe was totally different, and it reminded me how much the setting shapes how people talk. Still, when I came back here it felt like we’re stuck between letting heat in and denying space to push ideas.
