Where's the best place to see the northern lights, Iceland or Norway?

I’m trying to plan a trip where I can see the Northern Lights, but I’m overwhelmed by all the conflicting advice on the best time and place to go. Some people swear by Iceland in March, while others say you have to go to northern Norway in the dead of winter for a real chance.

I went to Iceland in March hoping for the Northern Lights. It was cold and still dark at 9 pm, but the weather kept flipping between clear and cloudy. We had one brief curtain of green when the sky finally opened, but otherwise it hid behind clouds most nights. March felt quieter, a lot of people say it’s a sweet spot, but for me it was more luck than plan.

A friend did northern Norway in midwinter. Long nights, almost total darkness, stock of hot drinks. We were told the aurora season peaks around late February to early March, but we mostly sat waiting in a dry bus stop for hours while the sky stayed stubborn. We did see a few glows after midnight, but it wasn’t dramatic. The bigger win was the clarity when the wind died and the stars came out.

Sometimes I wonder if maybe chasing the perfect time is the wrong problem. It might be the forecast reliability, or the number of willing nights, or the gear that keeps you warm enough to stay out longer. If you pick a place with better data on cloud cover but worse aurora intensity, you still get nothing. Is the problem the time or the weather pattern or just luck?

I tried to keep dates flexible and watched cloud-cover forecasts for a couple of weeks before committing. One plan shifted twice because a few clear nights vanished behind weather, and I ended up cancelling a cheap add-on tour. It felt like patience mattered more than the dream.
