Which single variant cover should I buy for this indie superhero comic?

I just got the first trade of a new indie superhero series, and I'm finding the sheer number of variant covers for issue #1 a bit overwhelming. I want to collect the story, not every possible cover, but I’m worried I might miss a key artist's contribution or a cover that becomes important later. How do you all decide which single version of an issue to buy when there are so many?

In my last indie run I picked one cover I actually liked—the main release art—and stuck with it. If the interior art clicks with you, that helps, but I don’t chase every variant. If a variant features a favorite artist I’ll grab that one as a personal bonus, but I don’t build a set.

I used to grab too many and ended up with crates of duplicates I didn’t care about. Now I decide by feel: does the cover match the tone I got from the solicitation, and is the price reasonable? If yes, I buy that one and wait to see if the story pulls me along.

I once tried cataloging every cover like a library, even labeled by artist, but then I forgot which issue I actually cared about and started tossing receipts. Still, the spine color helps me line up the issues on the shelf, which is a small victory for organization, I guess.

Do you think chasing a story impact variant is the real problem or is it the fear of missing a future key issue?
