Which true crime podcast digs into investigations without sensationalism?

I’ve been trying to find a good true crime podcast that doesn’t just rehash the same famous cases, but I keep hitting dead ends. I want something that really digs into the investigation process without feeling exploitative or overly dramatic.

I finally found something that avoids rehashing famous cases. In the Dark seasons 1 and 2 really digs into the investigation side—the missteps, what evidence mattered, and what investigators chose to chase. It doesn’t glam it up, it just shows how hard it is to get to truth.

Someone Knows Something by CBC is slower, quieter, and interviews people who lived with the case years later. It’s less about drama and more about what the investigator had access to, what was missed, what you can’t prove.

Criminal is a nice change of pace: compact, humane looks at crime and the people around it, not a loud confession machine. It’s episodic and uncertain, but it avoids the big sensational pull.

I’ve tried a bunch and some episodes still feel slick or exploitative; maybe the problem isn’t the cases but how they’re framed. Do you think the real issue is the framing more than the subject?
