Which version should I buy: PS5 native app or PS4 with upgrade?

I just got a PS5 and I'm trying to decide which version of a game to buy, but I'm getting confused by the whole native PS5 app versus the PS4 version with a free upgrade path. I bought one thinking it was the right one, but it just launched the PS4 edition and I don't see any option to get the enhanced features.

What helped me was checking the store page for the game and looking for a free PS5 upgrade tag or a separate PS5 download; sometimes the upgrade isn’t automatic and you have to grab the PS5 build.
