Why are new members leaving after they join my hobby forum?
#1
I’ve been trying to build a more active community around my small hobby forum, but I’m hitting a wall where new members sign up, post once, and then vanish. I’m wondering if the problem is that I’m focusing too much on features and not enough on fostering real connections from the start.

I tried a welcome thread and a few prompts for new members, but the signup spike fades fast after day one.

We started a buddy system where a volunteer checks in with a newbie daily for the first week, and a couple of them kept posting beyond that first comment.

Maybe the problem isn't motivation at all but timing or the niche itself; I keep wondering, are people signing up for something they never intend to stick to?

We cut back on feature bloat and kept onboarding simple, just a greeting and one easy prompt; the tone felt warmer, though the numbers barely moved.

I tried leaving it alone for a week and saw mixed signals; some people came back, others didn't, and I can't tell if it was luck or the approach.
