Why did indie superhero art feel cluttered yet grow on you?
#1
I just got the first trade of a new indie superhero book, and I'm honestly a bit thrown by the art. The linework is incredibly detailed, almost to the point where it feels cluttered, and the color palette is this muted, almost sickly mix of ochres and olives. I can't tell if it's a deliberate, brilliant choice to reflect the grim tone or if it's just visually unpleasant to read. Has anyone else read something with a similar aesthetic that grew on them?

That dense linework was rough at first, yeah. I flipped back a couple of pages and let the panels breathe, and somehow the pace opened up. The color kept pulling me into the grim mood, and after a bit it started feeling intentional rather than messy.

I had the same thought, maybe it’s deliberate, maybe not. I kept wavering between admiration for the detail and annoyance at how heavy it reads on a first pass.

Maybe the problem isn’t the art direction but the pacing. If you’re stuck on the texture, you miss the beats. It could be the wrong thing to pin the unease on the palette alone.

I once bought a book with similar so many lines and a muddy palette, and the whole thing started to click once I stopped chasing polish. I tried reading a few pages in grayscale and it helped me spot the silhouettes clearer. Still not sure if it’s the right move for this one.
